NDOLA United have appointed Steven ‘Barnes’ Mwansa as coach ahead of the National Division transitional season kicking off in 15 days’ time.
Mwansa has taken over the mantle from Tenant Chembo, who has rejoined Super League giants Zesco United as assistant coach.
Ndola announced the appointment in a statement issued on Wednesday that Mwansa has signed a one-year contract.
“Ndola United Football Club has appointed Steven Mwansa as head coach to replace Tenant Chembo, who has moved to Zesco United. His (Mwansa) appointment reflects the club’s confidence in his leadership, technical expertise and understanding of the team’s philosophy as it prepares for the upcoming transition league season,” read the statement.
Ndola last featured in the Super League in 2001.
Mwansa, whose last job was at topflight side Mutondo Stars, has also drilled Kitwe United, Indeni, Chambishi and Trident, among others.
“I am happy to be back home and I am looking forward to helping the team during the transitional league. Ndola United is a big team,” said Mwansa, a former Ndola player and coach.
He will be deputised by Watson ‘System’ Musonda while Henry Lusambo and Robby Mwase are physical and goalkeepers’ trainers respectively.
Ndola finished in 12th position last season with 39 points.
They are in the Northern zone alongside town mates Forest Rangers and Indeni, Jumulo, Kitwe United, Chambishi, Lumwana Radiants, Mathkat United, Mines United and FC Leopards.
Mwansa will start his reign with a home tie against FC Leopards on September 26.
The Southern zone has Atletico Lusaka, Kafue Celtic, Aguila Stars, Nampundwe, Forest Myooye, Play it Forward, River Plate, Locus, Chipata City Council and Mikalile.
The top two teams in each zone will win promotion to the Super League, with the winners battling it out in the final for the title.
