KABWE Municipal Council (KCM) plans to build a modern double-storey market at Green Market.
Kabwe town clerk Jovax Ngoma said the decision to upgrade the trading area, also referred to as Town Centre Market, is meant to increase trading spaces in the municipality.
Mr Ngoma said in an interview yesterday that KMC has submitted its proposal for the project to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for approval.
“So, we have conceptualised the project for that (Green Market). We want to upgrade that one into a double-storey market so that we move away from single-story design,” he said.
He said KMC has submitted the design of the market and the bill of quantities to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.
He said the budget of the project will be known when the ministry reviews the documentation that KMC has submitted.
He said funding for the project is expected to come from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development because it is a capital project.
Mr Ngoma said if funded using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), the project could take a period of five years.
Mr Ngoma said KMC has a responsibility of providing trading space to an increasing number of traders in markets.
He said the transformation of Green Market into a double-storey building is among the alternative solutions of ensuring that Kabwe has better and bigger markets.
